More than 45 teachers selected to attend fourth Qatar University ExxonMobil Teachers Academy this month

DOHA, Qatar – The 4th annual Qatar University ExxonMobil Teachers Academy started today in Doha and will continue until November 26, 2015. The academy, a joint collaboration between the National Center for Educator Development, Qatar University (QU) and ExxonMobil Qatar, is an innovative professional development program designed to enhance math and science teaching skills among educators.

More than 45 grade three to grade six primary school teachers from more than 40 of Qatar’s independent schools have been selected to participate in the 2015 edition of the academy. Their participation has been determined by long and in-depth deliberations between QU and the Supreme Education Council to ensure that this year’s educators – as in previous years -- are both qualified and committed to the teaching profession.

As an expansion of the academy, Maharaty, an initiative by Her Excellency Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al-Thani, will also have a dedicated role at this year’s academy, with the participation of 10 grade three science and math teachers. Maharaty participation will bring the total number of participating teachers from Qatar’s independent schools to around 50.

The teachers will undergo a week-long, intensive professional development program that will foster innovative math and science teaching skills, helping them to inspire their students to develop an interest in math and science. Education experts who have travelled from the United States to Doha will serve as instructors at the academy’s workshops. Using a series of creative, fun and meaningful classroom-style activities, they’ll provide the teachers with pedagogical tools for dealing with the young active learners in their classrooms.

QU College of Education (CED) dean Dr Hissa Sadiq said: “In its 4th year, the Academy has grown in popularity and has provided IS teachers with critical tools to create an inspirational teaching/learning environment which has proved to be of considerable benefit to students and teachers alike.  We are pleased with its success and look forward to continued partnership with ExxonMobil in this and other projects”.

"Over the past three years, the Qatar University ExxonMobil Teachers Academy has evolved into one of the leading teacher training programs in Qatar,” said Alistair Routledge, President and General Manager for ExxonMobil Qatar. "Now in its fourth year, the academy is one of our principal education initiatives, thanks to our collaboration with Qatar University and the National Center for Educator Development. The academy exemplifies our commitment to drive human potential in Qatar by helping teachers with tools and techniques to energize their students’ enthusiasm for science and math -- paving the way for Qatar’s next generation of scientists and engineers.”

The Qatar University ExxonMobil Teachers Academy is part of ExxonMobil’s long-term commitment to stimulating students’ interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) at all ages – the key to building a competitive workforce and ensuring students get the education needed to become the engineers and innovators of tomorrow. As part of this commitment, ExxonMobil supports the professional development of highly qualified teachers. These initiatives are in line with the objectives outlined in the Qatar National Vision 2030’s Human Development Pillar, which seeks to empower the people of Qatar so that they can sustain a prosperous society.

QU and ExxonMobil Qatar’s years of partnership have resulted in a variety of successful programs, including Life is Engineering; the Environmental Studies Center; the Gas Processing Center; the Qatar University ExxonMobil Research Scholars Program; the ExxonMobil Chair for Science and Technology; and ongoing guest lectures.
