DOHA, Qatar – ExxonMobil Qatar, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, and Qatar University’s National Center for Educator Development are celebrating the fifth anniversary of the annual Qatar University ExxonMobil Teachers Academy this month. The academy -- an innovative professional development program designed to enhance math and science teaching skills among educators – is scheduled to take place in Doha from Nov. 27 to Dec. 1, 2016.
The academy provides a valuable opportunity for teachers to impact educational change in Qatar, starting with their own classrooms. Since its establishment in 2012, 165 of Qatar’s science and math teachers have benefited from the intensive, week-long program. These teachers have gone on to impact more than 7,000 students in Qatar’s independent schools, deepening their knowledge of math, science, technology, and engineering (STEM) subjects and creating a ripple effect in the education field.
This year, in an effort to broaden the reach of the program, the academy will shift its curriculum from primary school to secondary school. Around 40 teachers from grades seven through nine will participate in the 2016 edition of the academy, as selected by QU and the Ministry of Education and Higher Education through a rigorous process. As an expansion of the academy, Teach For Qatar has also hand-selected 10 teachers to attend for the first time, bringing the total number of participating teachers to 50.
Six Doha-based educators and three education experts from the U.S. will lead the academy, helping the teachers to build on their expertise and enhance their understanding of math and science content. The academy will also equip the teachers with interactive teaching tools that will ignite their students’ passion for math and science.
“My colleagues and I at Qatar University’s College of Education are thrilled to be co-hosting the fifth edition of the Qatar University ExxonMobil Teachers Academy in Doha with our partner ExxonMobil Qatar,” said Ahmed Abdulrahman H Y Al-Emadi - Dean of College of Education Office. “This year is a milestone anniversary for all of us who have worked hard to bring the academy to Qatar so that we can make a difference in the way our educators teach math and science. The academy has helped our teachers design and manage learning environments that provide students with the time, space and resources, for learning these subjects.”
“We are very pleased with the progress we have made over the past five years, and look forward to continuing to leverage our relationship with our partners to provide even better academies in the future,” he/she added.

We are grateful for the collaboration of our partners the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and Qatar University who share in our vision, and we look forward to many more years of success,” continued Routledge.
Dr. Abdullah Mohammad Hamdan Abu-Tineh – Director, National Center for Educational Development- NCED, has been responsible for leading the team at Qatar University who work on bringing the academy to Qatar year after year. He explains how it has progressed since 2012, “The Qatar University ExxonMobil Teachers Academy is the outcome of collaboration, shared visions and a lot of hard work. Our efforts haven’t stopped over the last five years. We have continuously reviewed and evolved our content to ensure that every year our workshops are new and relevant to the math and science teachers that participate and also to their students and Qatar’s education system.”
“The academy has proudly become a leading professional development training program for teachers in Qatar. Every year we have more and more interest from teachers to participate, and also from other local organizations whose focus is educational development. This is an acknowledgement of how effective the academy is, and we are very proud to have achieved this in such a short time. We have a lot planned for this year’s academy, and are very excited to welcome our new group of 2016 teachers..”
